  • Testimonial for Johnny & Team

For over 13 years, I have had the privilege of working with numerous special educators that run the gamut from ABA therapist, speech therapist, occupational therapist and finally to Johnny and his team. Despite the best of efforts by various educators, Dylan remained an enigma, so very difficult to unravel and manage, even with medication.

Things came to a head in early 2015 when Dylan, then 11 years old, regressed inexplicably. He was a tortured, enraged soul, which ultimately manifested into self-injury behaviour (SIB). The teachers in his school felt defeated and we had to withdraw him from school after 4 long years. My husband and I would have been in a deep funk, if it hadn’t been for Johnny that year.

We transferred Dylan to Melbourne Specialist International School (MSIS) and in no time, it needed help badly. As serendipity would have it, I discovered Johnny and he was more than ready to take up the gauntlet despite the formidable task that lay ahead. Even till today, I marvel at his team’s mental and physical fortitude and tenacity. They finally put a stop to Dylan’s SIB after 6 battle-riddled months at home and in school. Johnny and his team did not just theorise but walked the talk. They totally won everyone over, including MSIS teachers.

Dylan is now “smarter” in every respect, be it at math (basic though it may be), reading or vocational skills. Al these did not come overnight; it required assiduous research on Johnny’s part before he could map out an Individual Learning Programme (ILP) for Dylan that matched his innate ability, temperament and idiosyncrasies. Every milestone achieved was meticulously recorded, regression monitored and the ILP adjusted by the team to ensure results.

In school, abstract lessons taught in class were painstakingly broken down into simple concepts by the therapists, thus enabling Dylan to understand and learn alongside his other classmates who are more high functioning. Ditto that for the vocational training as well. Not only is he a good team member at vocational work, he is also able to perform the task independently and with panache too.

Most of all, Dylan has become more sociable and he genuinely enjoys the company of family, friends and the occasional outings with dear uncle Johnny (which is part of the ILP), who used such outings to reinforce good behaviour in public milieu. Family outings with Dylan are becoming more pleasurable.

Because of Johnny and the team, Dylan no longer needs medicine to function after 5 long years. He was officially weaned of in January this year, capping all that he had overcome and achieved under their guidance and support.

Engaging Johnny and his team is by far the best decision that I have ever made, and having worked with so many outstanding special educators, I think I am qualified to say that the team led by Johnny is definitely the creme de la creme.

  • As the saying goes, time is your best friend or your worst enemy.

As the saying goes, time is your best friend or your worst enemy. This quote is important for people of all ages and perhaps more so for children with special needs.

Autism is neither treatable by medicine nor will it go away. If you ignore it and turn to internet science for advice, your child will only become progressively worse. Early intervention is the only treatment and perhaps your best gift for your child and yourself.

Zhiyu started displaying some signs of autism and we didn’t know better as he is our first born. He knew words but was unable to string a coherent sentence by 3 years old.

His teacher called my wife one day and asked to meet. My wife somehow knew something was wrong called me, sobbing and asked me to accompany her.

I will never forget that meeting when we were told that Zhiyu is different. He didn’t understand simple instructions, didn’t follow the teacher but chose to follow his own set of rules. This we now understand as join attention. A simple way to find out is to ask yourself if your child has ever asked you to look at something, if he didn’t it’s time to get a diagnose.

We immediately seeked his PD for advice and we were redirected to Dr. Lee. What followed were an endless stream of standardised tests on him and us.

True enough, he was diagnosed with autism and we were told to prepare for the worse.

What happened later was a constant turmoil of shifting schools when we see no development and choosing between speech, behavioural and occupational therapist. We didn’t know any better and couldn’t decide on which one was best for him.

The worst part is, the therapist with their best intention gave us conflicting advices. For e.g. we learned from the occupational therapist that he is not autistic and it is only a matter of whether he want or don’t want and not a matter of can or cannot. Although comforting to hear we decided to not continue with occupational therapy quite early (fortunately).

We met Johnny and decided to stick with him when we see improvements with Zhiyu. We carried on with speech therapist for a while when the doctors adviced us to continue with it. But there wasn’t much progress. For instance, the speech therapist was unable to teach Zhiyu colours when Johnny and the therapy team managed to settle it within a few sessions. Zhiyu only ate Japanese curry with hotdog and drink formula. We tried many things and one day we threw in the towel, told Johnny, and the team settled it within 2 sessions. Zhiyu today gobble up vegetables in a way that will make even vegetarian proud.

With autism, there seems to be a switch somewhere in their brain and you just had to find it, turn it on for them to change from root learning (pure memory) to understanding it.

I reluctantly tell the psychologist that we had stopped speech therapist (we stopped short of admitting that we stopped because we were extremely tight on cash!). We were waiting for her judgemental look when surprisingly she said, it’s ok some children do very well with behavioural therapy!

Zhiyu progressed very well and very soon he had to leave nursery for primary school. And a few more standardised test later he is accepted into Pathlight the Oxford of special school. Without Johnny and his team, Zhiyu might still be eating curry, running around with no purposes, and can’t tell pink from blue.
